The Keuka College women's cross country team opened the 2014 season with a 12th place finish Saturday at the always-tough Oswego State Invitational.
Keuka was led by freshman Chelsea Cooper (West Monroe, N.Y./Altmar-Parish-Williamstown), who, in her first collegiate race, logged a 61st-place finish by completing the 5 kilometer course in a time of 21 minutes, 35 seconds.
The Green and Gold scored 366 points to place 12th out of 13 teams.
RIT placed all five scoring runners in the top 10 and scored 28 points to easily earn the team title. Cortland (54) was second, followed by Ithaca College (69), the University Rochester (101), Brockport (172) and host Oswego (185).
St. John Fisher was seventh with 203 points, followed by William Smith (221), SUNY ESF (228), Mohawk Valley Community College (283), Potsdam (312), Keuka College and Wells College (410).
Freshman Mariah Sergent (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) was Keuka's second-fastest finisher, completing the course in 22:03 to place 69th among scoring runners.
Freshman Michaela Martin (Sterling, N.Y./Red Creek) rounded out Keuka's top five finishers, placing 81st after completing the course in 24:55.
The competition drew 189 runners from 13 schools.
The Green and Gold will next compete in the annual Hobart College Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 13.
