Women’s Volleyball Drops Pair in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Keuka College Women's Volleyball team concluded the 2019 Guetle Invitational with a pair of losses at Catholic University on Saturday.

Keuka College (3-4) was swept in both matches, losing to Wesley College and the hosts, Catholic University.

Wesley College 3 vs. Keuka College 0 – 25-20, 25-19, 25-14

Keuka College struggled in the opening match against the Wolverines. Wesley College took the first two sets after the Wolves had more errors than kills in the first set and an even amount in the second set.

The Wolves hit eight kills against just four errors in the third, but Wesley also had their best set of the match with 11 kills as the Wolverines swept the match.

Lead Wolf: Erika Shepard hit a career-best nine kills for the Wolves. That accounted for nearly 40% of the Keuka College offense in the opening match.

Catholic University 3 vs. Keuka College 0 – 25-13, 25-18, 29-27

The host Cardinals began the game strong as Catholic totaled 14 kills in the opening set. Conversely, Keuka College was held to six as Cathloic took the first set 25-13.

The trend continued in the second. Keuka had five kills and seven errors in the frame. Catholic University hit 16 kills on their way to the 25-18 set victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Wolves battled to stay in the match in the third. Despite dropping behind 11-2 in the third, the Wolves rallied, tying the set at 22-22. The Wolves had a chance to serve for the set, but an error tied the set back at 24-24. The Wolves had 18 kills in the frame, but a kill by Catholic ended the match as the Cardinals won the third 29-27 and the match 3-0.

Lead Wolf: Freshman Ericka Carlson led the defensive efforts for the Wolves. The libero finished the match with 16 digs for the Green and Gold.

  • Saturday was the first ever meeting between Keuka and Wesley
  • The Wolves previous faced the Cardinals in 2001. Keuka College was swept by Catholic that year in the Worthington Classic in Washington, D.C.
  • Sophomore Delaney Yorks was named to the All-Tournament Team

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves return back to the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Wednesday night. Keuka College will host Oswego State in a non-conference match at 7pm.
