KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Volleyball team was defeated on Thursday night by Alfred University 3-1 in a non-conference match at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

The seniors starred for Keuka College (11-16) on Senior Night. Lauren Moelbert led all attackers with 12 kills and added five aces. Alyssa Rex finished with 22 assists, 14 digs and seven kills. Leading in digs for the Wolves was Emily Cottrell (Homer, N.Y. / Homer) and Kayla Brown added eight digs. Janessa Vaadi tied her career-high with six kills for the Wolves.

Alfred University 3 at Keuka College 1 – 25-20, 23-25, 28-26, 27-25

Alfred University used a six-point run to build a 13-5 lead over Keuka College. The Wolves would fight back, narrowing the gap to three points, but the Saxons won the opening set 25-20.

The second set started extremely close. Keuka College scored three points in the middle of the set to tie the set and take a 17-15 lead. Alfred would tie the set multiple times but the Saxons would never be able to take the lead back. The Wolves closed it out with a block by Janessa Vaadi and Abby Anderson to win the second set 25-23, leveling the match.

Staying in the rhythm of the match, the third set was tight with the lead bouncing between the two teams. In the final points of the third, a kill by Anderson gave the Wolves an opportunity to serve for the set. Alfred got a kill, but the Wolves answered right back with a kill by Grace Allen to bring back set point. However, Alfred would win the final three points of the third to win the set 28-26, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Wolves were not deterred as they won the first three points of the set and built an 11-3 lead over the Saxons. Keuka College would push the lead to 10 points at 15-5, forcing the Saxons to use their second timeout of the set. Following the stoppage, Alfred got right back in the set, winning seven straight points. The Wolves stopped the run but the Saxons came right back to tie the set at 17-17. It would be Alfred with the first match point at 24-23, but the Wolves tied it on a kill by Lauren Moelbert. Then a solo block by Abby Anderson let Keuka College serve for the set. Like the third set, however, the Saxons responded with three straight points to win the set 27-25, winning the match 3-1.

  • Despite the loss, Keuka College still has a 26-21 lead in the series all-time with Alfred University
  • The loss snapped a 14-match winning streak for Keuka College against Alfred University at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center
  • The two teams first faced each other in 1975
  • Lauren Moelbert passed Michelle Kress for tenth on the career kills list at Keuka College. The senior now has 779 in her four seasons at Keuka
  • Alyssa Rex added three aces to her totals to tie Paige Golden for sixth on the career list with 159

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves have one final match day before the 2018 North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament. Keuka College will travel to Houghton College this Saturday to face Geneva College and the host Highlanders in a tri-match. The Wolves will then turn their focus to the postseason as they open the NEAC Tournament on Tuesday at Wells College.
