ONEONTA, N.Y. – 2016 leading scorer Emily McGuigan picked up where she left off as she scored the lone goal in Keuka College's 1-0 overtime victory over Utica College on Friday afternoon.
The Wolves (1-0, 0-0 NEAC) and the Pioneers squared off in Oneonta, N.Y. in the Erinn K. Brozman Cup, hosted by Hartwick College.
Keuka College 1 vs. Utica College 0 - OT
Gunkel stood tall for the Wolves in the opening half. The freshman made five saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
The second half followed the same pattern as Utica College outshot Keuka 6-3. The freshman keeper for the Green and Gold turned away both shots on goal she faced in the second. In the other end of the field, Keuka was not able to produce a shot on target, however the defense held and the game remain scoreless after 90 minutes.
The Wolves struck quickly in the extra frame. Just over a minute into the action, Kelsey Maurer sent a cross in and found a cutting Emily McGuigan. The sophomore sent the ball flying into the upper-right corner of the goal to give the Wolves the 1-0 season-opening victory.
- Keuka College snapped a four-game losing streak to Utica College. With the win, Keuka is now 8-5 all-time against Utica College
- This was the third straight meeting between Keuka College and Utica College to go into overtime. Utica won the previous two meetings in double overtime.
- McGuigan scored her second career overtime winner. She previous scored against Morrisville State in overtime last September
- It was the first season opening win for Keuka College since they defeated Cazenovia College 5-0 in 2000.
Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves take on the host school, Hartwick College, on Saturday afternoon in Oneonta. Last season, Hartwick defeated Keuka in the Erinn K. Brozman Cup 2-1 and the Hawks are 4-0-1 all-time against the Wolves.
