Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Keuka College to Victory over Nazareth

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team outscored Nazareth College 21-13 in the fourth quarter to come from behind and beat the Golden Flyers 62-57 on Thursday at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.  

Keuka College (3-2) was led in scoring by junior Sam Laranjo with career-high 20 points. The guard also added seven assists and three steals in the win. Sophomore Brianna Legacy was also in double-figures with 13 points. Freshman Anna Hoover led the rebounding efforts with a game and career-high nine boards.

Keuka College 62 vs. Nazareth College 57

Nazareth College came out forcing the issues, causing seven Wolves turnovers in the opening quarter. Keuka College was able to overcome. Anna Hoover led the Wolves with five points and four rebounds as the game would be tied 13-13 after the first quarter.

The Golden Flyers made their first shots in the second quarter and built a lead over Keuka College. Nazareth held their largest lead of the half, eight points, with three minutes left in the frame. Keuka College scored eight of the final 10 points of the half, with Sam Laranjo totaling six, to narrow the margin. The Wolves trailed 26-24 at halftime.

In the third, Nazareth College played from ahead, but the Wolves always kept the game within reach. A layup by Hoover cut the margin to one and the Wolves took a 36-35 lead on the next possession on a layup by Laranjo with three minutes left. The Golden Flyers quickly answered with a three to reestablish the lead. Nazareth led 44-41 going to the final quarter.

After a slow start to the final quarter, Riley Record knocked down a three for Keuka to tie the game at 46-46 with seven minutes left in regulation. Nazareth once again answered with a three, but the Wolves had an answer of their own. Back-to-back baskets by Abby Hess and Sam Laranjo. After nearly two minutes of scoreless play, the Wolves extended the lead to 52-49 following a driving layup by freshman Amelia Poole. The Wolves would not look back. The Golden Flyers trimmed the lead to one multiple times in the final minutes, but Keuka College closed it out from the free throw line as they defeated Nazareth College 62-57.

KC Notes:

  • Thursday was the second straight win for Keuka College over Nazareth College. The Golden Flyers still hold a 17-10 lead in the all-time series
  • It was the first time that Keuka College has played Nazareth College at home since the 2001-02 season and first home victory for the Wolves over the Golden Flyers since the 1994-95 season
  • The Wolves went 23-46 from the floor. It was just the tenth time in program history that they have shot 50% or better from the floor
  • Anna Hoover added a career-high nine points with her career-best nine rebounds

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will open North Eastern Athletic Conference play as they travel to Cazenovia College to face the Wildcats on Saturday. Keuka College swept the season series against Cazenovia last year and have won the last six meetings overall against the Wildcats.
