First-Place Abington Knocks Off Women's Hoops

Senior Erica Pendrak (New Hartford, N.Y./New York Mills) reached double-figures in scoring for the fourth time in the last five games, but the Keuka College women's basketball team fell to first-place Penn State-Abington 71-43 Saturday in Abington, Pa.

Pendrak scored 10 points with 3 rebounds and 2 steals, and sophomore Katie Stuart (Tupper Lake, N.Y./Tupper Lake) added 9 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the loss for the Wolfpack (1-8, 1-4 NEAC).

Sophomore Samantha Blum (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) snared a team-high six rebounds as Keuka enjoyed a 34-27 edge in rebounding against the Nittany Lions (9-1, 6-0).

Junior Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) added six points, while senior Amanda Kubitz (Spencerport, N.Y./E.J. Wilson) had five rebounds with four points for Keuka.

Abington shot 52.1 percent from the floor (25 of 48) and connected on 70 percent of its three-pointers (14 of 20). Stephanie Keyes scored a game-high 32 points (7 of 9 on three-pointers), while Janaiah Elum added 23 points (5 of 5 on three-pointers) for the Nittany Lions.

The Wolfpack fell behind 5-0 before Stuart hit a pair of '3s' sandwiched around a layup from Kubitz as the Green and Gold led 8-7 with 15:55 remaining.

Trailing 12-8, senior Brittany Hadley (Jasper, N.Y./Jasper-Troupsburg) hit a jumper, and Pendrak and Cole each added '3s' to put Keuka up 16-12 with 10:19 left in the first half.

Abington answered with an 8-0 run and led 20-16 on a layup from Kyra Lunsford with 9:17 remaining.

Cole closed the deficit to 20-19 on a triple with 9:01 left, but the Nittany Lions went on a 15-5 run and led 35-24 with 3:54 remaining in the half.

Keuka trailed 40-29 at halftime, and neither school scored during the opening 4:54 of the second half.

A free throw from Hadley sliced the deficit to 40-30, but Abington went on 26-8 run en route to its seventh straight win.

The Green and Gold continue a four-game road trip with a 12 p.m. NEAC clash Sunday against Bryn Athyn College. Keuka's 2015 home opener is against Lancaster Bible College at 6 p.m. Friday night.
