GENESEO, N.Y. – The Keuka College Softball team won the opener 6-1 at SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, but fell in the nightcap 4-1 to the Knights in a non-conference doubleheader.
Keuka College (10-6, 8-0 NEAC) got five hits on the day from leadoff batter Jessie Hammers. The freshman also added two runs scored and two RBIs on the day. Mickenzie Palmer had a pair of hits in each game for the Green and Gold. Colleen Mooney earned the win in Game 1 for Keuka College allowing just one run and striking out five.
Keuka College 6 at SUNY Geneseo 1
The Wolves took an early lead as Hammers reached on a bunt single to start the game. Following an error and a Katelyn Warren single, Mickenzie Palmer singled to centerfield to score a pair and give Keuka a 2-0 lead. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fifth as Jessie Hammers had an RBI single and Samantha Blum scored two on a single. That would be enough for Mooney. The freshman earned her sixth win of the season as Keuka went onto win Game 1 by the score of 6-1.
Balanced Attack: The Keuka College offense showed balance against the Knights. Eight of the nine starters for Keuka College recorded a hit as the Wolves totaled 11 in the game.
Keuka College 1 at SUNY Geneseo 4
The Knights scored first in the second game as they plated a run in the bottom of the first. The game would remain 1-0 until the Wolves pushed one across in the fifth. Alyssa Barnas reached on a bunt single to lead the inning off. Next up was Jessie Hammers who ripped a triple down the left field line to score pinch runner Alexa Brown to tie the game at 1-1. However SUNY Geneseo got three runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut Keuka down 1, 2, 3 in the seventh for the 4-1 victory over the Wolves.
Lead Wolf: Jessie Hammers set a new career-high with three hits in the game for Keuka College. The freshman leads Keuka College with a .487 batting average and has hit safely in 12 of the 14 games she has played in.
- The win in Game 1 for Keuka College was the first win ever over SUNY Geneseo. The Knights have won the previous 18 meetings dating back to the 1995 season
- The all-time series between Keuka College and SUNY Geneseo is at 19-1 in favor of the Knights
- The loss in Game 2 snapped a seven-game winning streak for Keuka College
Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves return home for a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheaders. The Green and Gold will host the Green and White of Morrisville State on Friday afternoon. The Wolves will then welcome Cazenovia to town for a doubleheader on Saturday. Saturday will also be Parents' Day as Keuka College honors the families of the 2017 Softball team in a ceremony in between games of the doubleheader.
