VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Keuka College Softball team opened their 2017 season on Friday with a pair of games at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast. The Wolves (0-2) lost to Fredonia 3-2 in the opener and fell to Shenandoah 12-3 in game two.
Jessie Hammers and Katelyn Warren each had a pair of hits on the day for Keuka. Hammers, a freshman, had a triple against Fredonia for her first collegiate hit. The big blast in game two came from Samantha Blum. The senior hit a two-run home run for the Wolves.
Keuka College 3 vs. Fredonia 4
Fredonia got out to an early lead over the Wolves with a pair of runs in the second inning. Keuka responded with runs in the third and fifth to tie the game. Freshman Brittany Vergason tied the game with a single, scoring Blum. The Wolves would take the lead in the six on a wild pitch, but Fredonia got a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walkoff win.
Keuka Debuts: Four freshmen made their debuts for Keuka College against Fredonia. Hammers had a triple, Alyssa Barnas scored a run and Brittany Vergason had an RBI single. Freshman Colleen Mooney started in the circle for the Wolves. She went the distance, striking out seven batters.
Keuka College 3 vs. Shenandoah 12
The Hornets jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Alyssa Barnas hit an RBI single in the second to get one back for the Wolves, but Shenandoah answered with four in the third. The Hornets would finish the game in five innings, defeating Keuka College 12-3.
Big Blast: The big hit in the game for Keuka came from the bat of Samantha Blum. The senior sent one over the fence for a two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was the first home run of the season for the team and the 10th of Blum's career.
- Today was the first meeting between Fredonia and Keuka College
- Keuka College and Shenandoah faced only once before. The Hornets beat Keuka College in the Beach Blast last season.
- The Wolves are now 8-3 in season-openers under Head Coach Jamie Burke
- Samantha Blum has moved into a tie for second all-time on the Keuka College home run list. Her blast against Shenandoah was the 10th of her career, tying her with Morgan Engelbert (2008-11)
Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves will finish their season opening trip to Virginia on Saturday with a pair of games. Keuka will take on Hunter College from New York City in the first game. The Wolves will then face the host Marlins to close the trip. Virginia Wesleyan is currently ranked 11th in the NFCA Division III Top 25 Poll.
