The Keuka College men's tennis team traveled to Lancaster Bible College Friday afternoon for its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener, and despite a solid win from junior Justin Fries (Marion, NY/Marion), the Storm suffered an 8-1 setback at the Linden Hall School in Lititz, Pa.
Fries outlasted Alex Derus in a three-set thriller at first singles, winning the first set 7-5 before dropping the second 6-2. In a winner-take-all pro set tiebreaker, Fries emerged with a 10-6 win, his first victory of the season after dropping a three-setter at first singles vs. Pitt-Bradford.
But the Storm (0-2, 0-1) lost the remaining five singles matches and dropped all three doubles contests to lose for the second time this year.
Fries and senior Kyle Rivera (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) lost to Derus and Grant Noel 8-3 at first doubles. They were the only Storm doubles team to score a game off the Chargers (5-3, 1-0 NEAC).
Besides Fries, only Rivera, who fell 6-1, 6-0 to Alex Ko at second singles, managed to win a game in singles action for the Green and Gold.
Keuka returns to action with a 10 a.m. NEAC clash Saturday morning with Penn State-Berks.
