KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – A pair of first half goals helped lift the Keuka College Men's Soccer team over the visiting Elmira College Soaring Eagles, winning the match 3-1, Wednesday night at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Keuka College now sits at 2-0-1 on the young season. Elmira falls to 0-3. Keuka will take to the road this Saturday and travel to Yonkers, N.Y. to face Sarah Lawrence College. Kickoff with the Gryphons is scheduled for 3pm.
Keuka got off to a fast start against the Soaring Eagles on Wednesday night. Edler de Castro found Ben Schreiber over the top, behind Elmira's back line. Schreiber finished it into the right side of the net for the 1-0 lead with 31 minutes left in the first half. Schreiber nearly set up a second goal 10 minutes later, but is volley pass was intercepted and cleared. The Green and Gold added to their lead in the 34th minute. Leandro Curran intercepted a short goal kick by Elmira's keeper. He dribbled down and beat the goalie for the 2-0 advantage.
The first twenty minutes of the second half were mainly spent in the midfield with both teams fighting for possession. Elmira was able to get a couple shots off on goalie Preston Vick, but the Keuka keeper made the saves. Keuka added an insurance goal in the 76th minute. Noah Titus sent a long ball from midfield and found Rachid Blanken. Blanken deked past the goalie and slid it into the back of the net for the 3-0 lead. With 10 minutes left to play, Elmira got on the board on a header off a cross to make it 3-1. Keuka College would retain possession over the final minutes of play to run out the clock for the 3-1 victory.
