Senior Austin Gerber (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored four goals and added an assist and sophomore Leandro Curran (New York, N.Y./Westlake) added a goal and three assists to power Keuka College to an 8-0 win over D'Youville College Saturday evening at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Gerber scored a goal and added an assist and Curran and freshman Christian Hewitt (Portland, Maine/Wyndham) tacked on a late goal in the first half as the Wolfpack (2-0) took a 3-0 halftime lead in the third annual Keuka College Lakefront Classic.
Gerber then tacked on three straight goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half, junior Ben Schreiber (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) scored on a penalty kick and freshman Jason Grugnale (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tacked on a goal as Keuka improved to 6-0 all time in three Lakefront Classics.
It was the first four-goal game from a Keuka College men's soccer student-athlete since Gerber accomplished the feat during a 6-1 win over SUNY Cobleskill Oct. 26, 2013.
Gerber started the scoring in the 17th minute. Off a free kick from 22 yards out, Gerber rifled a shot that sailed into the far right corner of the goal.
After freshman Edler De Castro (Willemstad, Curacao/SGO Jacques Ferrandi) booted a clearing pass, Gerber made a long run, tracked down the loose ball and found Curran wide open inside the 18. Curran sent a shot from 16 yards out towards the near post for a 2-0 lead.
Keuka tacked on a third goal in the first half. Junior Matt Hey (Rushville, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) threw the ball in towards the far portion of the goal, where Hewitt was waiting. He tapped the ball into a wide open corner of the goal as the Green and Gold took a 3-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the scoring continued for Keuka. Gerber scored twice during a span of 1:15 for a 5-0 lead, and Curran extended the lead to 6-0 when he received a pass, made a one-touch move and slotted a ball to Gerber. Gerber received the pass eight yards out and scored towards the far post.
Schreiber converted a penalty kick for a 7-0 lead, and Grugnale closed out the scoring when he converted a shot in the 79th minute.
Keuka outshot the Spartans (0-1-1) 15-6 in the win. Junior Preston Vick (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) made two saves and sophomore Willie Romero (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) and freshman Josh Rasmussen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) contributed to the team shutout.
The Green and Gold return to action with a 7 p.m. non-conference home game against Alfred University on Saturday, Sept. 6.
