Junior Austin Gerber (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) had his first multi-goal game of the season and freshman Leandro Curran (New York, NY/Westlake) added a goal to spark the Keuka College men's soccer team to a 3-1 win at Penn State-Berks Saturday afternoon.
Gerber scored the first of his two goals in the sixth minute as the Storm (6-6-1, 1-5 NEAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Nittany Lions (3-13, 1-6).
Gerber received a pass from sophomore Jake Altman (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester), got free, dribbled along the left side of the field and scored into the far corner of the goal for the early lead.
The two schools played scoreless over the final 39 minutes of the opening half, and the Storm's lead remained one goal until Curran added an insurance goal 11:53 into the second half. Off a through ball from Gerber, Curran chipped his shot over the goalie's head and into the far back corner of the goal in the 57th minute as the Storm took a 2-0 lead.
Gerber essentially clinched the win with his tally in the 83rd minute. Off a feed from Curran, the speedy Gerber separated himself from the defense, went on a breakaway and scored into the far back corner of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Gerber and Curran are currently tied for the team lead with five goals apiece.
Matt Wagner scored on a header in the 86th minute to snap the shutout for Berks.
Freshman Willie Romero (Jersey City, NJ/Union City) made five saves to earn his second consecutive win.
The Storm are on the road for two more games to close out the season. Keuka travels to Penn State-Abington at 1 p.m. Sunday before finishing with a 1 p.m. game at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, Oct. 26.
