ALFRED, N.Y. – The Keuka College Men's Lacrosse team opened the 2016 season in a bang, defeating Alfred State 22-3 on Saturday afternoon
Keuka College (1-0) will be in action next weekend, facing Elmira College. It will be the home opener for Keuka and their first game on the new turf at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Tyler Skowronski led Keuka with six goals and an assist in the game. Matt Beebe, Zach Dempsey, and Brendan King each added three goals for the Green and Gold. Beebe led the team with six assists. King had three helpers and Dempsey added a pair. Dan Blaessig and Patrick Giardino each added a pair of goals. Also with goals for Keuka was Clayton Vaughn, Ryan Waldron, and Matt Mahalick. Jacob Wood made 11 saves in the victory.
Alfred State opened the scoring on Saturday with a man up goal in the opening four minutes of play. The Green and Gold responded with eight unanswered goals in the first quarter. Branden King netted the first goal of the season for Keuka with 8:33 left in the first. King would get his second at 4:12 and a goal by Tyler Skowronski eight seconds after that put Keuka in control 5-1. The Green and Gold added two goals in the final minute of play to lead 8-1 after the opening 15 minutes.
Keuka's run of continued in the second quarter as they scored three goals in 51 seconds to open the second quarter. After the Pioneers found the back of the net, Skowronski quickly responded with a pair of goals for Keuka as a part of a 5-0 run. Alfred State scored in the final minutes of the half, but Keuka lead 16-3 at halftime.
Keuka remained in control of the game in the second half. They netted three goals in each of the final two quarters and Jacob Wood turned away all seven Pioneer shots on goal in the half as Keuka would go onto to defeat Alfred State 22-3 to open the 2016 season.
