KEUKA PARK, N.Y. -- The Keuka College Men's Basketball team dropped their season opener to Hobart College on Tuesday by the score of 75-63 at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
Keuka College (0-1) will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. this weekend to play in the Vassar Tip-Off Tournament. The Wolves will open the tournament playing the hosts, Vassar College, on Friday night.
Both teams started slow as they got into the new season. A small run put Hobart up 11-6, but a personal run by Greg Tyler gave the Wolves the lead right back. The junior hit a pair of threes and topped it off with a layup to give Keuka a 14-11 lead with 9:09 left in the first. The three point lead would prove to be the largest of the game for Keuka. The Statesmen converted a three point play minutes later to take a lead. A quick 6-0 run secured the lead for Hobart, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. Keuka College struggled from the free throw line. They missed their first 10 free throws in the game and finished the first half at 29%, going 5-17 from the line. Hobart shot 64% from the line in the first half and carried a 30-23 lead into the halftime break.
Keuka College was able to stay in the game for most of the half. Hobart grew their lead to double-digits in the half, but the Wolves continuously went on small runs to draw the difference back to single-digits. Each time Keuka would work the margin down to a couple of possessions, the Statesmen would respond and grow their lead back out. The difference continued to be at the free throw line. Hobart went 17-20 in the second half. Keuka College increased their shooting to 63%, 15-24, but they were unable to make up the difference as they would fall to Hobart College to open the season 75-63.
