The Keuka College baseball team was swept by Houghton College Monday afternoon in Houghton, N.Y.
The Wolfpack (3-12) lost game one, 9-1, and suffered a 9-4 setback in the nightcap of the non-conference doubleheader.
Keuka was outhit 10-3 in the opener but led 1-0 heading into the top of the second.
After senior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first, Keuka used a two-out rally to scratch across the first run.
Senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) singled and moved to second on an error, and the Green and Gold had runners at first and second after senior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was hit by a pitch.
Freshman Brian Colbert (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) put the Wolfpack up 1-0 on an RBI single up the middle that scored Burachalk, and the bases were loaded after freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) dropped a single into left field. But a strikeout ended the threat.
Houghton struck for three runs in the second, speared by a two-run double by Tage Johnson, and tacked on a run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh to earn the win.
After stringing together three singles in the first inning, Keuka was held hitless by Jared Knowlton the rest of the way.
Ryan took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings pitched.
In the nightcap, Burachalk was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Borchert drove in two runs, Colbert had an RBI, and senior Conner Anderson (Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) was 2-for-2 in the loss.
Houghton threatened to take the lead in the top of the second, but junior Kyle Michaud (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) worked around a two-out, bases loaded jam, getting Enrico Sukhdeo to strike out swinging to end the threat.
Michaud kept the Highlanders (12-10) scoreless until the fourth, when Sukhdeo keyed a three-run outburst with his two-run triple.
The Green and Gold retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) drew a leadoff walk, Burachalk singled, and Anderson's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third with one out.
Colbert lofted a run-scoring sacrifice fly to center field to score LaRue, and Burachalk crossed the plate after Borchert reached on an error to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Keuka had a good opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off with a walk and stole second before junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.
A sacrifice moved the runners to second and third, but a fly out ended the threat for Keuka.
The Wolfpack did pull even in the sixth. Anderson led off with a single, and sophomore pinch-runner Jared Taylor (North Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) advanced to second on a sacrifice from Colbert. When Borchert reached on an error, Taylor scampered home with the tying run.
But the Highlanders pushed across six runs in the top of the seventh to complete the sweep.
The Green and Gold return to action with a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday against D'Youville College at Houghton.
Keuka then hits the road Saturday and Sunday for a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheaders. The Wolfpack play at Penn State-Abington at 1 p.m. Saturday, and are at defending NEAC champion Penn State-Berks at noon Sunday.
