Sophomore Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) and freshman Joe Marasco (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) each recorded three hits during Thursday's non-conference clash with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the defending Division III national baseball champions.
But the Keuka College baseball team suffered an 11-3 setback to Wisconsin-Whitewater in Auburndale, Fla.
Payton was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Marasco was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, and sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Wolfpack (2-7).
LaRue and Payton each had doubles, while freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) went 2-for-5 in the loss for the Green and Gold.
Freshman Josh Wang (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) gave the Wolfpack three solid innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and one strikeout.
Senior Zach Nobles (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) took his first loss since the 2013 season, allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits in the start.
Keuka trailed 6-0 after one inning, but clawed across a run in the third when LaRue plated junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) on an RBI single.
Wisconsin-Whitewater tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Green and Gold got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth. LaRue doubled down the left field line to score Marasco, and Payton dropped a single into center field to score LaRue and trim the deficit to 9-3.
But the defending national champions from Wisconsin-Whitewater added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to improve to 8-1.
